HAZOP Studies are a specialised risk management tool involving formal review of a process, its equipment and operations in order to identify potential hazards and operational problems.

A Boughey Pty Ltd (ABPL) can provide the framework for undertaking effective HAZOP Studies and provide experienced facilitators for managing HAZOP workshops.

Methodology

Based on this standard framework, the HAZOP examination procedure systematically questions every part of a process or operation to discover how deviations from normal operation can occur and whether further protective measures, altered operating procedures or design changes are required.

Why undertake a HAZOP Study?

HAZOP Studies are usually performed to provide safer plants and optimized resources.

Identifying the Risks

Risks are normally identified using a full description of the process which typically includes a P&ID and process flow diagram, and systematically questions every part of them to discover how deviations from the intention of the design can occur and determine whether these deviations can give rise to hazards.

Analysis

The main elements of the risk analysis considered in a HAZOP are:

  • Intention
  • Deviation
  • Causes
  • Consequences
  • Safeguards (controls)
  • Corrective action

Our approach thoroughly considers all these elements so that the solutions are effective, both technically and economically without compromise to the safety and efficiency of the operation.

HAZOP Workshop

The HAZOP process benefits from a group “brainstorming” approach, using a series of “what if” type questions.

Outcomes of a HAZOP Study

As an outcome of the HAZOP process a database of hazards and operational issues is produced, along with specific action plans to eliminate or reduce the hazard to a tolerable level.

Monitor and Review

ABPL can participate as a member on review committees to monitor hazards and evaluate the effectiveness of the hazard management plans and actions. Hazards and the effectiveness of the mitigation measures can be monitored to ensure that changing circumstances do not alter hazard priorities.  By putting your own operations under the magnifying glass you may avoid the many pitfalls that face the unprepared organisation.

Hazard Information Management

In support of the HAZOP process, ABPL have also prepared specific tools that can be employed to directly assist in the identification, analysis, preparation and monitoring of hazard management plans.  HAZSYS is a Hazard Information Management System in the form of a database in which your hazard related risk information can be stored and managed.

Legislative Trends

There is a current trend in legislation to push toward a “zero risk” environment.  The application of risk management strategies such as HAZOP are a vital link in working toward and achieving these goals.  When undertaken in a thorough manner, hazards and risks can be managed in a far more effective way, giving management and community the confidence that your company is committed to the greater wellbeing of all stakeholders.

Risk Management

HAZOP is just one of the many different risk management methods available to your business.  ABPL can provide advice on the selection of the most appropriate methods to suit your needs.  For more information on risk management and management systems, contact ABPL.
